Social Documentary. (writing bit) pt 1

What I plan to do for my project is to express the severity of littering and garbage in urban areas. People, animals and even vehicles are impacted by littering. People get sick, hurt and there is no good reason for littering. People give excuses all the time like “We won’t be here forever” or “the earth is already polluted, one piece of trash can’t hurt” which is absolute bogus.

People don’t seem to get a grip on how bad it is, whether or not they are a cause, it can be difficult to understand and that is why I have chosen this topic. The story I hope to tell for this assignment is how pollution/littering can negatively affect people’s lives.

The way I understand social documentary is that It’s a form of  photography meant to bring current social issues to the public’s notice. It could also be used to describe a socially conscious subgenre of photography that aims to depict the lives of those who are less fortunate or have certain unnoticed issues.

Concerned photography shows depicts an either grotesque or humorous event. The photograph is a bizarre and deceitful forgery. Every photograph, regardless of who took it or who is depicted in it, is a heinous violation of human dignity, a hideous fabrication of nature, and a heinous insult to humanity. It shows the negative side of things, the parts we ignore.

Compassionate Photography is based on the premise of emotional connection. Often shown, a person emitting strong feelings towards a situation or idea such as anger, happiness or sadness. Compassionate photography uses images with strong meanings to express emotion. Or at least that is how I see it.

These images have an impact on the viewer. They make a feel a certain way because of what they capture.

That was the day world changed. In November sixteenth 2023, Flight AA 449 never arrived at the St Louis Airport in Wisconsin. Minutes after the plane had taken off, there were several issues involving the engine and outflow valve. The passengers on the plane were unconscious before the incident due to a malfunction in the pressure valve. The plane has been found, it was half sunken in the bayou’s of Louisiana. Its passengers have yet to be found.

The pilot sent a message to the airport minutes after takeoff, Pilot Aaron May informed Air Traffic Control about the issues with the aircraft. the planes malfunctions caused the Pilot to have almost zero control over the direction of the aircraft. after about two hours of the aircraft steering them towards the Gulf of mexico they began to fall towards the bayou’s of Louisiana and then finally crashed. the plane  was found very quickly because the tracker still opperated, but when they discovered the aircraft. they were surprised when every single passenger was missing. It’s still a mystery where they went, and many have moved on.

The day the flight went missing, a photographer from a news company took this image of the terminal they were all supposed to walk through, that exact moment, maybe in another universe they would have. The airport held a mourning ceremony to honor the missing passengers and their loved ones six days after the incident.

To this day, the terminal sits empty, still waiting for its passengers to arrive. The passengers of flight AA 449 have been missing for over seventy years, but we still remember them and the empty terminal which was left unused. some say that when they are near the terminal, they can hear the passengers from AA 449 whispering to them “help us”

-This is entirely metaphorical.
